MIKE & THE MECHANICS

Hello and welcome back…. Mike & the Mechanics was formed as a side project by Mike Rutherford (Genesis).
The band started in 1985 and included singer Paul Carrack, Paul Young (singer), Adrian Lee(keyboard player) & Peter Van Hooke (drums).

Singer Paul Young died in July 2000 from a heart attack.

Mike & the Mechanics have released 7 albums to date and include songs like “Silent Running”, “All I Need is a Miracle”, “Nobody’s Perfect”, “The Living Years”, “Nobody Knows” & “Word of Mouth”

Song “The Living Years” was penned by Mike Rutherford after the death of his father.

My favorite album from Mike & the Mechanics would be their 1985 album (self titled) because it includes the song “Par Avion”… A haunting song, with mellow synths and the amazing  voice of Paul Carrack.
Why this song was never a single I will never know.

Mike & the Mechanics are a multi-talented band with some of the best songs of the 80s.

PAR AVION …………….. brings a small tear to your eye

SILENT RUNNING

SYLVESTER ( ft PATRICK COWLEY ) – do you wanna funk

Hello and welcome back…. Another song I thought I had already done but no…. I have been slack.
This powerhouse of a song graced our radio’s back in 1982, “Sylvester” (Sylvester James) was the singer and it was produced by “Patrick Cowley”.
Patrick died the same year this song was released (1982)
Sylvester died in 1988
Previous to his death, Patrick also had hits with “Menergy” and “Megatron Man”
I head this song on a CD last night while picking up my daughter from work, while the music was playing, bass was pumping, the back door was slightly open so it was like my own private disco as the interior light was flickering on & off…. Hhhmm… you had to be there.

The song “Do you wanna funk” was heard in the 80s movie “Trading Places” with Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd.

KRISTINE – modern love ( sounds like the 80s )

Hello and welcome back….Modern music is making a comeback to the great sounds of the 80s.
“Modern love” by Greek singer “Kristine” has that great 80s sound written all over it, to its smooth flowing synths, great vocals and edgy drums, you can just close your eyes and pretend that it is 1984….I did.
“Kristine” has a slather of 80s goodness available on her SoundCloud page so be sure to check it out.
An incredible singer that sounds like she just stepped out of her Delorian from 1984 and into a Dance Club. Excellent

YAZOO (YAZ) – state farm ( Madhouse Mix )

Hello and welcome back…”State farm” by U.K.  band “Yazoo” (Yaz in U.S.A.) was the B-side to the song “Nobody’s Diary” from the 1983 album “You and Me Both”.
State Farm was only on the U.S album, replaced by the song “Happy People” in the U.K
I love this mix, it turns a slow funky version into a dance powerhouse and sounds great on a good pair of headphones.

LIVING IN A BOX – living in a box

Hello and welcome back….. British band “Living in a Box” was formed in 1985 but it wasn’t until 1987 till the band saw the music charts with a self titled song “Living in a Box” reaching no5 in the U.K music charts.
For me, I first heard this song while working in a retail store called “Venture”… it was kinda like a small version of K-Mart and can you guess what I was in charge of?… The toy section, Oh what fun I had setting up massive displays while listening to songs like “Living in a Box” only to watch some 5 year old kid pick the toy at the bottom and my work of art (Toy Display) came crashing down. Still it was my first job and it taught me how to deal with outraged mothers that couldn’t find their kids, who just happened to be buried under a pile of Care Bears…
